Mothering Boys: Hormone Edition

Navigating your hormonal changes while mothering boys in puberty

FEBRUARY 25, 2026  |  1:00PM EASTERN

Mothering boys through puberty while you navigate your own hormonal shifts is not for the faint of heart.

If you’re in this phase of life, you may be asking…

🌿 How do I deal with my own hormonal fluctuations during my menstrual cycle and perimenopause while mothering a boy who’s going through big hormonal changes too?

🌿 How do I “go with the flow” of these natural rhythms without feeling like I’m at the mercy of them?

🌿 What’s the most important support for myself at this time?

🌿 What’s most important for me to provide for him at this time?

As a woman, your body is ruled by your monthly cycle, and your overall health is determined by the health of that cycle. In addition to the monthly hormonal shifts, perimenopausal changes can take between 5 - 10 years. This means many modern mothers are riding big waves of deep biological changes while also mothering boys who are going through huge physical, psychological and emotional changes too.

When you don’t understand how your hormones, nervous system and capacity changes throughout the month and as you move through perimenopause, you may feel like you’re completely at the mercy of your body and your emotions. When you don’t understand how your son is changing, you may feel at the mercy of him too.

You may deal with challenges like:

  • Emotional volatility and mood swings that undermine your sense of control and make parenting feel unpredictable.
  • Severe fatigue and low energy that limit patience, consistency, and the ability to meet both your and your son’s needs.
  • Heightened irritability, boundary conflicts and communication breakdown when your low-tolerance days clash with his puberty-driven testing and defiance.
  • Isolation and lack of practical support or self-care time, leaving you depleted and unable to replenish.
  • Anxiety about bodily/identity changes and long-term health, fueling guilt, shame, and fear you’re failing as a mother.

What we need during this time of life can feel in total opposition to what our sons’ need as they go through puberty. But it’s not.

What we all need during this time is deep physical and emotional nourishment, the tools to regulate our nervous systems, and ways to build vitality and strength.

Hi, I’m Courtney, and I believe mothers have the power to create the world we want to live in.

Our liberation comes through our bodies. We can remember on a deeply cellular level how to nourish life and foster our web of interdependence. Our modern world has disconnected from this wisdom, but we can reclaim it.

My first big wake-up call happened in my late 20s when I was sidelined by extreme chronic fatigue. Through it, I discovered Ayurveda. It gave me answers and practices to support my own vitality and healing, and a practical way to nourish and nurture my future family.

In 2013 my first son, Sam was born, and two years later, my son Archie. Like so many moms, I flourished…and I struggled. I felt like my boys’ needs and my own were at odds. I was willing to sacrifice, but feared losing myself in the ways so many women before me had.

I worried and worried. About my boys’ sleep, about their diet, about their emotions and socialization. And I worried about my and my husband’s responses to them when we weren’t at our best and most regulated.

At the height of the pandemic, I started working with Somatic Experiencing and the nervous system, and it took my practice and my mothering to a whole new level. I saw in real time how my nervous system states have a direct impact on my family and the rhythm of our lives. I supported my own nervous system and saw my boys’ behavior improve and our family become more in tune and cohesive. Although I always knew it subconsciously, I now understood in a practical way both the responsibility and power I have to nurture my sons’ highest potential.

One of my most important lessons in all of this is my need to be in community with other women on this evolutionary path. Women have healthier nervous systems when we’re in safe relationship with others. We’re wired for bonding. It’s not just a want, it's a biological imperative. We need each other so we can mother our boys well. I’m glad you’re here, and I hope you’ll stay.

Much love,
